1. Perineum pain
The area between the vagina and rectum is called Perineum. It is sometimes torn during childbirth. You can feel slight discomfort or pain. When the site is surgically expanded for extra space, it can take up to 3 weeks to heal. If you are experiencing sharp pain, consult your gynaecologist immediately. She will examine the area and advise you on appropriate treatment.
2. Baby Blues
Postpartum depression is common, and many new mothers experience it. You are exhausted, sleep-deprived, anxious, emotional, and finding it challenging to manage baby and household chores. Don’t worry, your feelings are valid. Reassurance and sharing responsibilities can help you order it. Vaginal discharge increases after delivery and can continue for up to several weeks. Initially, it looks like period blood, but a few days later, it becomes pink and then changes to pale yellow. The placenta detaches after delivery and is removed from the vagina after delivery. If the small pieces of the placenta remain in the uterus, they are likely to get infected. Symptoms manifest as high-grade fever, increased count of white blood cells, the uterus being swollen and painful on touch and the pungent odour of the vaginal discharge. This condition requires immediate medical attention.
5. Infected incision after C-section
Self-examine the area and look for any unusual swelling, redness and draining pus in the incision area. If you see any of these symptoms, consult your gynaecologist. Do not scratch it.
6. Urinary Tract Infections
Urinary tract infections are most common among new mothers. Catheter-induced urinary tract infections can be easily managed by the antibiotic. Sometimes, this infection can reach up to the bladder. Women can experience high fever, a strong urge to urinate, and pain in the lower back. Drinking plenty of water can help flush out the bacteria.
7. Engorged Breast
As you start breastfeeding, breasts become swollen, large and tender. This engorged breast is resolved by setting a feeding pattern or stopping the feeding. However, if you are experiencing too much pressure, you can use ice packs or express some milk to relieve the stress.
Mastitis is the infection of the breast that occurs due to cracked nipples. The breast appears red, swollen and painful. It does not affect your breast milk. Warm towels can help relieve the discomfort. Avoid wearing tight bras.
Constipation and haemorrhoids are troublesome and take their own time to resolve. A high-fiber diet and plenty of fluids and water intake help relieve constipation. A warm sitz bath with povidone-iodine helps to reduce the swelling of haemorrhoids and prevent the chances of infection.
Exercise is the best way to regain strength, build stamina and lose all pregnancy weight. You might have to push yourself a bit, but slowly you will get there. Mild to moderate exercises are ideal for you. Do not forget to take care of yourself.
