Hysterectomy could be a scary word for many females but it can be a life-changing life-saving surgery for many. A Laparoscopic Hysterectomy is a procedure where a gynaecologist removes the uterus or uterus along with fallopian tubes and ovaries depending upon the case. Laparoscopic Hysterectomy is advised by the gynaecologist when it is in the best interest of the patient. There are various reasons for which a hysterectomy may be the best treatment option for a female. The most common being large uterine fibroid, severe endometriosis, uterine cancer or ovarian cancer. At our hospital in Gurgaon, Dr Amita Shah performs most of the cases through a laparoscopic method which is the best surgical technique for hysterectomy not only in India but across the world.

Diagnosis & Surgery

The diagnostic option depends upon the problem. In most of cases, a detailed medical history followed by a transvaginal ultrasound is considered the best for a detailed diagnosis. The ultrasound may show the presence of uterine fibroids in the uterus but it should correlate with symptoms. The common symptoms that may prompt for advanced investigations may include:

  • Heavy bleeding during periods
  • Lower abdomen pain
  • Cramps
  • Irregular menses
  • Painful sexual intercourse

The next level of investigation may include an MRI scan and certain blood tests. If our gynaecologist at Gurgaon Hospital feels that hysterectomy is the best line of treatment for the patient then she can plan one of the following laparoscopic hysterectomy:

  • Partial hysterectomy – only the upper part of uterus removal is done
  • Total Hysterectomy – Uterus removal along with cervix is done
  • Radical Hysterectomy – Uterus along with cervix and ovaries are removed

The removed tissue is sent for biopsy to rule out any possibility of cancer. Most of the patients post-surgery are on their feet the next day and are discharged in another day or two. The complete recovery takes about 6 weeks. You may be required to visit Dr Amita Shah our gynaecologist to ensure that the post-surgery recovery is going on the right course.
