Most women have two ovaries which are located on either side of the uterus and form an important part of the female reproductive system. The ovaries produce eggs which are fertilized by the male sperm resulting in pregnancy. The ovaries also produce the female hormones estrogen and progesterone which makes a woman feminine.
Ovarian cyst meaning: Cysts are fluid-filled sacs which develop inside one or both the ovaries. The most commonly found ovarian cyst types are the follicle cyst, corpus luteum cyst, ovarian cyst dermoid, hemorrhagic ovarian cyst, and the ovarian cyst endometriosis (endometriomas).
The best thing about most of the ovarian cysts is that they do not cause any symptoms and are mostly diagnosed when you are unsuccessful in getting pregnant despite trying for some time. However, some females may suffer from ovarian cyst pain such as pain in the bowel, pain before and after the menstrual cycle, pain in the thighs or lower back, and pain during sexual intercourse. Some females may suffer from more severe symptoms like fever, faintness, dizziness, and rapid breathing.
One cannot ignore the large ovarian cysts as they not only interfere in pregnancy but can have serious health repercussions. Sometimes when the cysts rupture they can cause a medical emergency requiring ICU admission for the patient. In some cases, an ovarian cyst is dangerous due to complications like rupture, torsion, or internal bleeding.

Diagnosis and Treatment
Ovarian cysts can be easily diagnosed on an ultrasound scan which may be followed with MRI Pelvis and some blood tests to rule out ovarian cancer. Doctors often evaluate the ovary cyst reasons and ovarian cyst causes before suggesting the next steps. Most of the cysts do not require any treatment and would disappear in a few months’ time on their own.
However, you must follow up with your gynaecologist who may do a repeat ultrasound scan to check the status of the ovaries and the cyst inside them. The ovarian cyst normal size usually ranges between 2–3 cm, but when the ovarian cyst size grows beyond 5 cm, regular monitoring is required.
Most of the cysts would not require any medicines. If the cysts do not disappear on their own and are preventing pregnancy then your gynaecologist may prescribe ovarian cyst medication as part of ovarian cyst medical treatment to shrink them. Smaller cysts in the ovaries can be removed surgically using a Laparoscope. This procedure is commonly called ovarian cyst laparoscopic surgery. If the cyst is large then abdominal surgery might be required for removing it.
If malignancy is diagnosed, then instead of removing the cysts, the gynaecologist may advise you to get the ovaries removed. In such cases, it is better to get the ovaries, fallopian tubes and the uterus removed to prevent the spread of cancer in the body.
If the ovarian cyst size for surgery is larger than 5 cm in diameter and is not disappearing on its own despite waiting for some months, then going for ovarian cyst operation or ovary cyst remove procedure is the best option to retain fertility. The biggest challenge comes in patients having large ovarian cysts and who want to get pregnant. In such patients, the preservation of ovary while doing ovarian cyst removal is of paramount importance. Dr Amita Shah has done a large number of surgeries for big ovarian cysts while preserving the ovaries during her stint with various hospitals in Delhi & Gurgaon. Most of these surgeries have been done laparoscopically.

Getting permanent birth control gives much more freedom to a female over her body. Financially also it is much cheaper than using condoms every time. Of course, it also depends on the frequency of intercourse and the cost of the condoms that one is using. Condoms have their own advantage as mentioned earlier. Tubal Ligation is not 100% successful in preventing unwanted pregnancies. In some cases, it may result in ectopic pregnancy which is an emergency and life-threatening condition for the female.
