What are uterine fibroids?

Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous (benign) growths or tumors that develop within the muscle layer of the uterus (womb). They are also called leiomyomas or myomas and are one of the most common gynecological conditions, affecting up to 80% of women by age 50.

Symptoms of Uterine Fibroids

Types of Uterine Fibroid

Intramural Fibroids

Grow within the uterine muscle wall most common type causing heavy bleeding and pelvic pressure.

Subserosal Fibroids

Develop on the uterus’s outer surface, may form stalks, and cause pressure on nearby organs.

Submucosal Fibroids

Grow beneath the uterine lining and extend into the cavity, often causing heavy bleeding and fertility problems.

Cervical Fibroids

These grow in the wall of the cervix, the lower part of the uterus.

Pedunculated Fibroids

Grow on stalks, occurring either outside or inside the uterus.

Treatment for Uterine Fibroid

Medicinal Treatments

Medicinal Treatments

Hormonal therapies like combined oral contraceptives, progestogens, and GnRH agonists or antagonists help control heavy bleeding and pelvic pain.

Selective progesterone receptor modulators (SPRMs) reduce bleeding and fibroid size with intermittent use.

NSAIDs relieve fibroid-related pain.

These treatments offer short-term relief and do not permanently remove fibroids due to possible side effects with long-term use.

Minimally Invasive Procedures

Minimally Invasive Procedures

Uterine artery embolization blocks blood flow to fibroids, causing them to shrink.

Radiofrequency ablation destroys fibroids using heat, performed through laparoscopic or vaginal methods..

MRI-guided focused ultrasound uses targeted waves to ablate fibroid tissue..

Endometrial ablation removes the uterine lining to reduce bleeding but does not eliminate fibroids.

Surgical Treatments

Surgical Treatments

Myomectomy removes fibroids while preserving the uterus and fertility, done via hysteroscopic, laparoscopic, or open surgery.

Hysterectomy removes the uterus completely, curing fibroids permanently but ending fertility..

Surgery is usually advised for severe symptoms, large fibroids, or when preserving fertility is not possible.
